Business Contract Hire (BCH) Explained: A Complete UK Guide
Business car and van leasing with Applied Leasing — established in 1990.
Business Contract Hire (BCH) is a way for eligible UK businesses to lease a car or van for an agreed period without purchasing the vehicle outright.
Whether you're a sole trader, partnership, limited company or an established business managing several vehicles, understanding how Business Contract Hire works can help you decide whether it suits your requirements.
At Applied Leasing, our experienced leasing specialists help businesses explore vehicle leasing options through a selected panel of finance providers, with clear information about costs, contract terms and what happens at the end of an agreement.
What Is Business Contract Hire?
Business Contract Hire is a vehicle leasing arrangement where a business hires a car or van from a finance provider for an agreed period and mileage allowance.
The business normally pays an initial rental followed by regular monthly rentals. The finance provider retains ownership of the vehicle, and the customer normally returns it when the agreement ends.
Business Contract Hire can be useful for businesses that want predictable vehicle rental payments without the responsibility of selling the vehicle at the end of the contract.
However, additional charges may apply for excess mileage, damage beyond the agreed fair wear and tear standard, early termination or other contractual obligations.
How Does Business Contract Hire Work?
The process generally involves six stages.
1. Choose your vehicle
Select a car, electric vehicle or commercial vehicle that meets your business requirements.
2. Choose your contract terms
Agree the contract duration, annual mileage allowance and initial rental. The available options depend on the finance provider and vehicle.
3. Receive your quotation
Your quotation should explain the initial rental, regular payments, applicable VAT, administration fees and any optional services.
4. Complete the finance application
The finance provider assesses the application using its own lending and eligibility criteria. Approval is not guaranteed.
5. Sign the agreement and arrange delivery
Once the application is approved, the order is confirmed and the required documentation is completed, delivery can be arranged subject to vehicle availability.
6. Return the vehicle at the end
At the end of the agreement, the vehicle is normally returned to the finance provider in accordance with the contract's mileage and condition requirements.

Who Can Apply for Business Contract Hire?
Business Contract Hire may be available to:
-
Limited companies
-
Sole traders
-
Partnerships
-
Limited liability partnerships
-
Established SMEs
-
Larger businesses and fleet operators
Eligibility depends on the finance provider, business circumstances, credit assessment and other underwriting requirements.
Can a new business get Business Contract Hire?
Some finance providers may consider applications from newer businesses, although they can require additional financial information or security. Approval is assessed individually and is not guaranteed.
What Are the Benefits of Business Contract Hire?
Business Contract Hire can offer several practical advantages.
Predictable Monthly Rental Payments
Agreed monthly rentals can help businesses plan vehicle expenditure over the contract period.
No Need to Purchase the Vehicle Outright
Rather than paying the full purchase price upfront, the business pays an agreed initial rental followed by regular payments.
Access to Newer Vehicles
Businesses can arrange vehicle replacement around their operational requirements and the end of their leasing agreements.
No Need to Sell the Vehicle
The finance provider normally retains ownership, so the customer generally returns the vehicle instead of arranging its resale.
Optional Maintenance Packages
Depending on the finance provider and vehicle, maintenance packages may be available for an additional cost.
Potential Tax and VAT Benefits
Eligible businesses may be able to recover some VAT and claim allowable leasing costs for tax purposes, subject to the relevant rules and their individual circumstances.
These potential advantages should always be considered alongside the total contract cost, mileage restrictions and other obligations.
How Much Does Business Contract Hire Cost?
The cost depends on the vehicle, contract length, mileage allowance, initial rental and any additional services.
A Business Contract Hire quotation may include:
-
Initial rental: The upfront rental amount, which is not normally a refundable deposit.
-
Monthly rentals: The agreed regular payments for the contract.
-
VAT: Business leasing quotations are commonly displayed excluding VAT, so the full amount payable should be checked.
-
Administration fees: Any applicable broker or arrangement fees, disclosed before agreement.
-
Maintenance: Optional servicing and maintenance packages, where available.
-
Additional charges: Possible costs for excess mileage, unacceptable damage or early termination.
A lower advertised monthly rental does not necessarily mean a lower overall contract cost. Always compare quotations using the same vehicle, initial rental, term, mileage and included services.
Can You Reclaim VAT on Business Contract Hire?
VAT recovery on Business Contract Hire depends on whether the business is VAT-registered, the type of vehicle, how it is used and the business's individual VAT circumstances.
For most qualifying leased business cars, HMRC normally restricts recovery of 50% of the VAT charged on the rental. The remaining 50% may be recoverable by an eligible VAT-registered business, subject to the normal VAT rules and any applicable restrictions.
Different treatment can apply in certain situations, including qualifying vehicles used exclusively for business without private availability, and particular commercial vehicle arrangements.
VAT recovery on separately identified maintenance charges may also be treated differently from the rental itself, depending on the arrangements.
Businesses should consult their accountant or tax adviser before relying on any VAT recovery assumptions.

Is Business Contract Hire Tax Deductible?
Business leasing costs may be allowable when calculating taxable business profits, subject to the applicable tax rules.
However, not every rental payment is automatically deductible in full.
For certain leased cars with CO₂ emissions above 50g/km, HMRC applies a 15% restriction to the rental deduction that would otherwise be allowable.
The precise treatment depends on the vehicle, lease arrangements, business use, accounting treatment and relevant legislation.

Applied Leasing does not provide tax advice. Businesses should seek advice from a qualified accountant or tax professional regarding their individual circumstances.
Business Contract Hire vs Finance Lease
Both arrangements allow businesses to use vehicles without buying them outright at the beginning of the agreement, but they operate differently.
Business Contract Hire
With BCH, the finance provider owns the vehicle and the customer normally returns it at the end of the agreed term.
The finance provider generally carries the vehicle's residual-value risk, subject to the customer meeting their contractual obligations.
Finance Lease
Under Finance Lease, the finance provider also retains legal ownership, but the customer may have greater exposure to the vehicle's residual value.
Depending on the agreement, end-of-term arrangements can involve the vehicle being sold to a third party or continuing into a secondary rental period.
Finance Lease does not normally provide an automatic right to own the vehicle.
The most suitable option depends on the business's cash flow, intended vehicle use, mileage requirements and preferred end-of-contract arrangements.

Can You Lease an Electric Car Through Your Business?
Yes. Eligible businesses can explore electric cars through Business Contract Hire, subject to finance approval and vehicle availability.
Electric vehicles may offer advantages for some businesses, including different running costs and company car tax treatment compared with petrol or diesel alternatives.
However, the overall suitability depends on charging access, real-world range, vehicle usage, insurance, electricity costs and the business's circumstances.
Where a company car is made available for private use, Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax may apply. The calculation depends on the relevant tax rules and vehicle details.
Applied Leasing can help businesses compare electric and conventional vehicles using the information available for each option.

What Happens at the End of Business Contract Hire?
At the end of a standard BCH agreement, the vehicle is normally returned to the finance provider.
Before collection, customers should check:
-
The agreed total mileage allowance
-
The vehicle's condition
-
The applicable fair wear and tear standards
-
Servicing and maintenance requirements
-
Any outstanding charges
-
The return and collection arrangements
The finance provider may charge for mileage above the agreed allowance or damage beyond the accepted condition standards.
The BVRLA's vehicle return guidance recommends inspecting the vehicle well before its return date.
Can You End a Business Contract Hire Agreement Early?
Early termination may be possible, but it can involve significant charges.
The amount payable depends on the finance provider and the terms of the agreement. Customers should request a written early termination quotation before making a decision.
Do not assume that a Business Contract Hire agreement carries the same cancellation or voluntary termination rights as other types of vehicle finance.
Business Contract Hire FAQs
Is Business Contract Hire the same as buying a company car?
No. Under a standard BCH agreement, the finance provider retains ownership of the vehicle. The business pays to use it for the agreed period and normally returns it at the end.
Can sole traders apply for Business Contract Hire?
Yes, some finance providers offer business leasing to eligible sole traders. Availability and approval depend on the provider's criteria.
Is maintenance included?
Not always. Maintenance is commonly an optional addition. Check exactly what is included in your quotation.
Can I change my annual mileage?
Some finance providers may allow a mileage adjustment during the agreement, subject to their terms and any resulting rental changes.
What happens if I exceed the mileage allowance?
Excess mileage charges may apply at the rate specified in your agreement.
Can I buy the vehicle at the end?
Standard Business Contract Hire agreements normally require the vehicle to be returned and do not provide a contractual purchase option.
Are Business Contract Hire rentals subject to VAT?
Yes, VAT generally applies to the rentals. The amount a business can recover depends on its circumstances and the relevant HMRC rules.
Can a business lease more than one vehicle?
Yes. Subject to eligibility and finance approval, businesses may arrange multiple vehicles through Business Contract Hire.
