Car Leasing Delivery Times Explained: Stock Vehicles, Factory Orders & Delays

How long does it take to receive a leased car or van in the UK?

When arranging a new car or van lease, one of the most common questions is: How long will my vehicle take to arrive?

The answer depends on whether the vehicle is already in stock, awaiting allocation or needs to be manufactured to order.

At Applied Leasing, we understand that delivery timing matters, especially when an existing lease is approaching its end or a business needs a replacement vehicle.

This guide explains estimated delivery times, the differences between stock and factory orders, potential delays, payment arrangements, cancellation considerations and what to check when your vehicle arrives.

How Long Does It Take to Deliver a Lease Car?

There is no single delivery timeframe for every leased vehicle.

Some in-stock vehicles may be delivered in up to 4 weeks, while factory orders and vehicles awaiting allocation can take longer.

Delivery times depend on:

  • Vehicle availability and supplier allocation.

  • Manufacturer production schedules.

  • Vehicle model, colour and specification.

  • Finance approval and documentation.

  • Registration and vehicle preparation.

  • Transportation and delivery arrangements.

All delivery estimates are subject to change. The up-to-4-week estimate is indicative and is not a guaranteed delivery commitment.

In-Stock vs Factory-Order Car Leasing: What's the Difference?

The main difference is whether the vehicle has already been manufactured or needs to enter production.

Feature In-stock vehicle Factory-order vehicle
Manufactured Generally already built May still need manufacturing
Estimated delivery Some may be delivered in up to 4 weeks Varies by manufacturer and model
Colour and specification Limited to available vehicles Greater choice may be available
Production waiting time Usually not required May be required
Guaranteed delivery date Not automatically Not automatically
Finance approval Required where applicable Required where applicable

An in-stock vehicle may be suitable for customers looking for earlier availability, while a factory order may offer more choice of specification.

Neither option automatically guarantees delivery by a particular date.

In-Stock Lease Vehicles: What Does In Stock Mean?

An in-stock vehicle is generally one that has already been manufactured and is held by a dealership or supplier, or is identified within an available vehicle allocation.

However, a vehicle described as available or allocated may not yet be physically held by the supplying dealership. Its exact location and status should be confirmed.

Because the vehicle has already been built, it may be available sooner than a factory-order vehicle.

How Quickly Can an In-Stock Lease Car Be Delivered?

Some in-stock lease vehicles may be delivered in up to 4 weeks, subject to confirmed availability and completion of the necessary arrangements.

However, in stock does not mean immediate delivery.

Even an available vehicle may require:

  • Finance approval.

  • Signed and accepted documentation.

  • Payment of applicable charges.

  • Vehicle registration.

  • Pre-delivery inspection.

  • Transportation arrangements.

Stock availability may change before an order is secured. Finance approval and acceptance of the necessary order documentation may be required before a stock vehicle can be reserved or ordered.

What Needs to Happen Before My Lease Car Can Be Delivered?

Several stages may need to be completed before a vehicle is released for delivery.

  1. Vehicle availability: The relevant supplier confirms the vehicle's availability.

  2. Finance approval: The finance provider assesses the application and confirms its decision.

  3. Order and contract documentation: The necessary agreements and documents are completed and accepted.

  4. Applicable payments: Any charges due before delivery are paid in accordance with the relevant terms.

  5. Procedural requirements: Any applicable contractual or administrative requirements are completed. Statutory withdrawal rights should be considered separately from vehicle-order cancellation.

  6. Registration and preparation: The vehicle is registered where required, inspected and prepared.

  7. Delivery arrangements: The supplier confirms the practical arrangements for delivery or collection.

The exact process varies by finance provider, agreement and vehicle supplier.

Finance approval may also be subject to expiry or reassessment where there is a significant period between ordering and delivery.

Factory-Order Lease Vehicles: Why Can They Take Longer?

A factory-order vehicle is ordered for production rather than supplied from completed stock.

Factory ordering may allow customers to choose particular colours, trims and optional equipment, depending on manufacturer availability.

The Factory-Order Process

Stage 1 – Order submission

The order is submitted through the relevant vehicle supplier or manufacturer arrangements.

Stage 2 – Production scheduling

The manufacturer may allocate an anticipated production period or provisional build week.

Stage 3 – Manufacturing

The vehicle is manufactured according to the confirmed order and applicable specification.

Stage 4 – Transportation

The completed vehicle passes through the manufacturer's distribution network.

Stage 5 – Registration and preparation

The vehicle undergoes the necessary registration, inspection, documentation and preparation.

Stage 6 – Delivery arrangements

Once the vehicle is ready and the relevant requirements have been completed, practical delivery arrangements can be confirmed.

A provisional build week is not the same as a confirmed customer delivery date.

Factory-order lead times vary between manufacturers, models and specifications.

Example of How a Vehicle Delivery Timeline Works

The following is an illustrative sequence for an in-stock vehicle. It is not a promise of how long any individual stage will take.

Stage What happens
1. Enquiry Customer selects a vehicle and requests availability information
2. Stock confirmation Supplier checks the vehicle's availability
3. Finance application Finance provider assesses the application
4. Documentation Relevant agreements and order documents are completed
5. Preparation Vehicle registration and preparation take place
6. Delivery Delivery or collection is arranged when the vehicle is ready

Some stages may overlap, while others cannot begin until earlier requirements have been completed.

A vehicle can also become unavailable before an order is secured.

How Are Vehicle Delivery Estimates Provided?

Estimated delivery information may come from the supplying dealership, vehicle supplier or manufacturer.

For factory orders, this may include an anticipated production period, provisional build week or estimated arrival date.

Customers should distinguish between:

  • Estimated delivery date: A provisional indication of when the vehicle may become available.

  • Confirmed delivery arrangement: A practical handover date arranged once the necessary requirements can be met.

  • Agreed contractual delivery date: A date forming part of the relevant contractual arrangements.

The legal significance of a date depends on the circumstances, what was agreed and applicable law. A delivery date does not necessarily need to be described as guaranteed to have contractual significance.

Why Do Car Leasing Delivery Delays Happen?

Vehicle delivery delays can occur for several reasons.

Manufacturer Production Changes

Manufacturers may revise production schedules or change the allocation of particular models.

Parts and Component Availability

The availability of electronic components, equipment and model-specific parts may affect manufacturing.

Transportation and Logistics

Shipping, distribution networks, vehicle transport availability and other logistical arrangements can influence delivery.

Vehicle Specification

Certain colours, trims, derivatives or optional equipment may have different production schedules.

Registration and Preparation

A vehicle may have reached the supplying dealership but still require registration, documentation, inspection or preparation.

Finance Approval and Documentation

Additional information, expired approvals or outstanding documentation may affect the arrangements needed before delivery.

Not every delay is caused by the manufacturer, and the reason for an individual delay may vary.

What Happens If My Lease Vehicle Is Delayed?

If your vehicle is delayed, the available next steps depend on the circumstances and the relevant agreements.

A delay may be particularly important if you are:

  • Approaching the end of an existing lease.

  • Planning to return or sell your current vehicle.

  • Replacing a vehicle used for business.

  • Arranging insurance or other commitments around delivery.

Customers should avoid making irreversible arrangements solely on the basis of a provisional delivery estimate.

How Will I Be Informed About a Delivery Delay?

Applied Leasing communicates anticipated delivery information based on updates received from the relevant supplier.

Where we become aware of changes to an anticipated delivery date, we aim to keep customers informed using the information available to us.

If your vehicle is delayed or you have questions about the latest information available, please contact your Applied Leasing representative.

Where appropriate, you may also need to review your contractual arrangements or contact the responsible supplier or finance provider.

Can I Cancel a Car Lease Order Because of a Delivery Delay?

Cancellation rights and possible charges depend on the circumstances, relevant agreements and applicable law.

A delivery delay does not automatically mean that every vehicle order can be cancelled without charge.

However, customers may have contractual or statutory rights depending on the circumstances, including where an agreed delivery obligation has not been met.

Applied Leasing's published terms also address circumstances involving material changes to an order or offer.

It is important to distinguish between:

  • Cancelling Applied Leasing's brokerage services.

  • Cancelling an order with the vehicle supplier.

  • Withdrawing from or cancelling a finance agreement.

These may involve separate contractual arrangements and different rights or obligations.

Could Cancellation Charges Apply?

Depending on the circumstances, cancellation charges may apply under Applied Leasing's published terms.

The supplying dealer or finance provider may also have separate contractual arrangements or charges.

Customers should review the documents provided for their transaction and contact Applied Leasing to establish the applicable process before requesting cancellation.

For independent information, customers can also visit Citizens Advice or GOV.UK.

Nothing in this guide removes or restricts statutory rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded.

When Do I Pay My First Car Lease Rental?

The timing of the initial rental and subsequent payments depends on the finance provider and the terms of the relevant agreement.

Customers should distinguish between:

  • Broker administration fee: A charge for Applied Leasing's brokerage services, payable according to the applicable quotation and terms.

  • Initial rental: The initial amount payable under the vehicle finance or hire agreement.

  • Subsequent rentals: Regular payments made according to the finance provider's agreed payment schedule.

  • Other charges: Any additional amounts payable under the relevant agreements.

The broker administration fee is separate from the initial rental and subsequent vehicle rental payments.

Customers should check their finance agreement and payment schedule to confirm when rentals are due.

When Is the Broker Administration Fee Payable?

Applied Leasing charges a broker administration fee for its services. The amount is disclosed in the relevant quotation and customer documentation.

Our broker administration fee becomes payable following finance approval. Once the applicable fee has been received and the necessary documentation completed, we can proceed with placing the vehicle order, subject to vehicle availability and any outstanding requirements.

The payment deadline and any applicable cancellation or refund rights are governed by our Terms and Conditions and relevant law.

For further information, please see our Information Notice and Terms and Conditions.

What Happens to My Payments If Delivery Is Delayed?

A delivery delay may affect the arrangements for activating an agreement or collecting rentals, depending on the finance provider and contractual terms.

Customers should not assume that every payment is automatically postponed or refunded because a delivery estimate changes.

If delivery is delayed, contact the relevant finance provider or Applied Leasing to clarify the applicable payment arrangements.

Any applicable rights concerning fees, cancellation or refunds should be considered separately under the relevant terms and law.

How Can I Prepare for My Lease Vehicle Delivery?

Before delivery, consider the following:

  • Confirm the latest available delivery information.

  • Review the finance agreement and any outstanding documentation.

  • Check the insurance requirements and appropriate start date.

  • Confirm the delivery address and any identification requirements.

  • Review the agreed vehicle specification.

  • Consider arrangements for your existing vehicle.

  • Check any outstanding payments due before delivery.

What If My Existing Lease Ends Before My New Vehicle Arrives?

If your existing lease is approaching its end, contact your current finance provider to discuss whether an extension or another arrangement may be available.

An extension is not guaranteed and is subject to the finance provider's approval.

It may involve revised rentals, additional finance-provider charges or an administration fee for arranging the extension.

Where an extension arrangement service is provided by Jurni Limited, any applicable fee should be confirmed against the current Information Notice and the documentation provided for that service.

Customers should confirm all costs and obtain approval before relying on an extension.

Where Can My Lease Vehicle Be Delivered in the UK?

Delivery arrangements depend on the vehicle supplier, the relevant agreement and the delivery address.

Applied Leasing's published Terms and Conditions describe arrangements for vehicles to be driven to a customer's specified UK mainland delivery address.

Customers should confirm their address and any particular access requirements before delivery arrangements are finalised.

Will My New Lease Vehicle Arrive With Mileage?

A vehicle driven to the delivery address will arrive with delivery mileage.

New vehicles may also have mileage associated with preparation, testing or other permitted movements.

If you require delivery by trailer or transporter, discuss this with Applied Leasing in advance. Additional charges may apply.

Delivery arrangements outside the UK mainland should be confirmed separately rather than assumed to be included.

What Should I Check When My Lease Vehicle Arrives?

When accepting delivery, customers should take reasonable steps to inspect the vehicle and confirm that it matches the agreed order.

Vehicle Specification

Check the make, model, derivative, colour and agreed optional equipment.

Exterior and Interior Condition

Inspect for visible damage, including scratches, dents, marks or other issues.

Delivery Mileage

Review the recorded mileage and the information provided at handover.

Documentation and Accessories

Check that the relevant handover information, documentation, keys and supplied accessories are present.

What Happens If My Lease Vehicle Arrives Damaged?

If you have any concerns, cause for complaint, notice damage or identify a discrepancy with the agreed vehicle specification, please contact Applied Leasing or Jurni Limited immediately, ideally before accepting delivery or signing the handover documentation.

We can help clarify the appropriate process and liaise with the relevant supplier or finance provider to establish whether delivery should proceed or whether the concerns need to be resolved first.

Where possible, take photographs, record any damage or discrepancies on the delivery documentation and retain copies of relevant correspondence.

If a problem becomes apparent after delivery, please report it to Applied Leasing or Jurni Limited promptly.

Signing a delivery receipt does not automatically remove any statutory rights that apply to the transaction.

Do Personal and Business Lease Vehicles Have Different Delivery Times?

Both Personal Contract Hire (PCH) and Business Contract Hire (BCH) vehicles can be affected by the same manufacturing, stock availability and transportation factors.

The delivery timeframe generally depends more on the vehicle and its supply status than on whether it is being leased personally or through a business.

However, finance approval, documentation, contractual arrangements and applicable rights may differ.

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Leasing Delivery

How quickly can I get an in-stock lease car?

Some in-stock vehicles may be delivered in up to 4 weeks, subject to confirmed availability and completion of the necessary arrangements. This is not guaranteed.

Does in stock mean immediate delivery?

No. Finance documentation, registration, preparation and transportation may still be required.

How long does a factory-order lease car take?

Factory-order lead times vary depending on the manufacturer, model, specification, production schedule and transportation arrangements. An individual estimate should be confirmed with the relevant supplier.

Can a factory-order delivery date change?

Yes. Manufacturer production schedules, allocation arrangements and transportation requirements can change.

Will I receive an exact delivery date when I order?

Not necessarily. An initial estimate may be provided, with practical delivery arrangements confirmed later.

What does quick delivery mean?

Quick delivery generally indicates that a vehicle may be available sooner than a factory-order vehicle. It does not automatically mean immediate delivery.

Can I change vehicles if my order is delayed?

This depends on stock availability, the stage of the order and the relevant contractual arrangements. Changing an order may have contractual or financial implications.

Can I cancel if my vehicle is delayed?

You may have contractual or statutory rights depending on the circumstances. A delay does not automatically establish a right to cancel without charge.

Do I need insurance before delivery?

Check the insurance requirements under your agreement and ensure any required cover is in place for the relevant handover arrangements.

Will I Pay Rentals Before the Car Arrives?

The timing of rental payments depends on your finance agreement and finance provider.

Applied Leasing's broker administration fee is separate from your vehicle rentals. The fee becomes payable following finance approval and must be received before we proceed with placing the vehicle order, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

Please refer to the section When Is the Broker Administration Fee Payable? for further information.

Can my existing lease be extended?

An extension may be possible subject to the current finance provider's approval. Revised rentals and additional charges may apply.

Will my new lease car have delivery mileage?

A vehicle driven to your address will have delivery mileage. Trailer or transporter delivery may be available at additional cost.

What happens if the vehicle arrives damaged?

Contact Applied Leasing promptly, ideally before completing the handover. Record the concern through the relevant handover process, take photographs where possible and retain supporting documentation.
